About Health Plan Hacker
Is Health Insurance a Safety Net or a Rigged Game?
We’re told health insurance is a necessity, a sign of responsibility. But what happens when the cost of that “safety net” feels more like a punishment? Every month, nearly $450 is withdrawn from my account, and I have to ask: Am I paying for peace of mind, or am I just paying into a broken system? I know this has to be a shared frustration, not something I am facing alone.
My Reluctant Journey
I’m not an industry insider or a policy expert. I’m a single mom in my 40s who has seen this system from every angle.
For most of my adult life, my annual income was under $30k. I’ve navigated Medicaid, WIC, and food banks. I know what it’s like to rely on the system for survival. When I finally got a job with private insurance, I thought I’d made it. But I was too busy working full-time and raising my daughter to ever really use it.
Now, as a remote contractor, I navigate the Health Insurance Marketplace on my own. For the past few years, that has meant paying over $400 a month for a plan I’ve barely touched—a high urgent care bill for my daughter, one minor surgery for myself, and not much else.
I have my own bad habits. I know my health choices carry risks, and I believe in personal accountability. But I also see a system that isn’t designed to incentivize wellness; it’s designed to process claims and protect profits.
The Mission: This Grand Experiment
The temptation to cancel my plan and invest that $450 a month myself is overwhelming. To be honest, sometimes taking that money to a casino feels like it might offer a better return. This blog is my public experiment to answer the question: Can we force this system to provide real value, or are we better off on our own?
My mission is to expose the flaws of the for-profit American health insurance system while empowering everyday citizens with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to navigate it. I want to hold the industry accountable by transforming confusion into clarity and helplessness into action.
